Ideas Generation Exercises

WALK THROUGH THE YELLOW PAGES -- Browse through the yellow pages from cover to cover. As you browse pay special attention to the categories that seem to draw your attention. Make lists of the categories that have to most columns and the ones that have the least. Which categories have no meaning to you? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
BESTSELLER OVERVIEWS -- Read the first and last chapters of any current top ten book list. What does it tell you about people? What does it tell you about trends? What are the common subject matters? Who do you see picking up the same book? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
TOUR REFERENCE LIBRARIES -- The reference librarian is your shortcut to information. What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
MAGAZINE BARRAGE -- Buy all kinds of magazines; those that you have never bought before as well as your favorites. Pay special attention to the advertisements and the products they proclaim. What kind of articles are in them? How many specialty magazines did you see? Which specialty magazines surprised you the most? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
VISIT SHOPPING MALLS AS A CREATURE FROM MARS -- Look at everything. Watch the people and their reaction to the products. Are there any similarities, age, sex, etc. What items are ignored? What items are stocked in several stores? Who had the best price? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
EXPLORE ART SUPPLY STORES -- Go to the best store and look at everything. The art store is a warehouse of materials that can be used in a variety of ways. What are the new items? What is most heavily promoted? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
REDESIGN A COMMONLY USED PRODUCT AND THEN BUILD IT -- Take any product in your home and redo it. Put it in a different package. Modify it for a different use. Anything? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
STUDY A PRODUCT IN DETAIL -- Take any product and give it a microscopic once over. List everything about, its materials, its characteristics, its functions, it benefits, etc. Now look t the list, how can you change each item? What ideas for products and/or services are generated?
