Guide to Preparedness Now - Bug Out First Aid Needs

In the event that you need to Bug-Out (leave your home and/or shelter), you need to have a First Aide Kit in your 72-Hour Bug Out Bag.
If you find yourself in a "bug-out" situation, you need to carry with you medical supplies to cover a variety of situations.  Your Bug-Out First Aide kit should treat both trauma & mobility injuries.   Bug out first aid kits are for one person.  Each member of your family has their own 72-Hour Bug-Out  Bag (BOB). Plan your bug out bagís first aid kit with the supplies you need to treat these injuries that range from blisters to major traumas. You may very well have to deal with:
  • Severe burns
  • Broken bones
  • Gunshot wounds
  • Knife wounds
  • Abrasions & cuts
  • Sprained ankles
  • Torn ligaments


As you consider options for you Bug-Out First Aide kit, you can:

  1. buy a premade first aid kit from a sporting goods store or online
  2. assemble items in a custom kit.


Below is a list of items which are kept in a water proof pouch in my BOB:

  • Pair Nitrile Gloves
  • Surgical Mask
  • Potassium Permanganate tablets to purify water
  • Tums & Pepto Tablets
  • Alieve tablets
  • Disposable thermometer
  • Neosporin antibiotic ointment
  • Gauze Dressing (1 X 8) + (3x4) + (4x4)
  • Non-stick dressing/gauze
  • Moleskin pack for blisters
  • Hand Sanitizer Wipes (individual packets)
  • Mylar Blanket
  • Medical tape
  • Super Glue
  • Alcohol Prep Pads
  • Band-aides in an assortment of sizes
  • Set Tweezers & Scissors
  • Vet Wrap (elastic)
  • Eye wash
  • Ace Wrap
  • EMT scissors
  • Quik clot bandage
  • Butterfly bandages in an assortment of sizes
  • Antihistamines for insect bites or allergies.
  • Burn cream
  • Vicks
  • Snake bite kit
  • Needle + dental floss
  • Razor blade (single edge)
  • Water purification treatments
  • Prescription medication
  • Saline solution (for contact lenses)
  • Lip-balm & sun screen

As a minimum, a good first aid kit need only contain Butterfly bandages, adhesive tape, non stick pads, 4x4 gauze, gauze rolls, burn cream, Neosporin, eye wash, tweezers, small scissors, and gloves.
