In the 16th century, it as a common practice for Germans to bring in a small evergreen tree and decorate is with roses, apples and colored paper.  Martin Luther is credited with being the first to put candles on a Christmas tree.  Tradition has it that the sight of a bright starlit night inspired the Protestant reformer to attach the candles.   German immigrants brought the Christmas tree to America in the 1820’s.
