The native Mexican weed, was brought to America by its first ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, in 1820’s.  The flower was referred to as Poinsett’s plant or Poinsettias.  Because the red leaves were though to be symbolic of the Star of Bethlehem, the plant became associated with Christmas.   Did you know that the actual flowers are in insignificant yellow balls in the center?
