The first living Nativity Scene was staged in 1223 by St.  Francis of Assisi for the Christmas Eve Mass in Grecchio, Italy.  His objective was to inspire worshippers.  From the living crèche, people began putting figurines of the nativity in their homes.   The custom spread from Italy to around the world.
