Most of the sources I researched agree that the designation of December 25th as the date to celebrate the birth of Jesus began in the 4th century.  Apparently it was an attempt to lessen the pagan celebration of the birthday of one of their gods and increase the awareness of Christianity.  December 25th was chosen as the date for Christ’s Mass.
